Dec. 5, 2002 – For anyone with questions about what the V.I. government is doing to attract corporate investment and foster a healthy business climate, two good places to get answers are this coming week's noontime meetings on St. Thomas and St. Croix of the Advertising Club of the Virgin Islands.
Frank Schulterbrandt, chief executive officer of the Economic Development Authority, will be the guest speaker at this third presentation of the season in the Ad Club's Professional Series.
The EDA was established to expand and diversify the V.I. economy, to create and retain jobs and to identify and solicit commercial and industrial investors to strengthen the territory's private sector.
Schulterbrandt will discuss steps being taken by the V.I. government to enhance and sustain the economic future of the Virgin Islands. He will describe how the EDA markets the territory to potential investors and what tools are needed to do so successfully, including which trade shows and conferences are essential to attend.
He'll talk about the competition and their enticements to potential investors versus those of the Virgin Islands. He'll also cover the nuts and bolts of the EDA program — tax incentives, training and technical support programs, and other initiatives to help existing and prospective V.I. companies prosper and grow. And he will answer questions from the audience.
Many know that Schulterbrandt, who became the authority's first chief executive just over a year ago, was a staff attorney with the Port Authority before that. Fewer may be aware that his career combining business, economics and law began with work as a computer programmer and financial analyst at Ford Motor Co. headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. He returned to the territory to become a capital projects accountant with Martin Marietta on St. Croix and then served as comptroller at St. Thomas Hospital.
A graduate of Charlotte Amalie High School, he received a B.S. in economics and business administration from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, an MBA from The Ohio State University, and his juris doctorate from Emory University in Atlanta. He began his legal career as an associate with the law firm of Palmer and D'Amour on St. Thomas and then joined the Port Authority staff. He is a past president of the V.I. Bar Association.
The St. Thomas luncheon meeting will begin at noon on Tuesday at The Pointe at Villa Olga in Frenchtown. The cost is $25 for members and $30 for others. Reservations are required; they may be made by calling 776-7828.
The St. Croix luncheon meeting will begin at noon on Wednesday in the conference room of the Caravelle Hotel in Christiansted. The cost is $18 for members and $23 for others. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 719-0578.
Both meetings are open to the public. Ad Club members include representatives of advertising, public relations and marketing agencies; corporate staff working in those areas; publishing and broadcasting media; and graphic artists, Web site designers and others involved in mass communications.
