Dec. 12, 2002 – 'Together We Read, Together We Succeed," said Danyel Joseph, a second-grader at Eulalie Rivera School, as she captured the first place prize in the St. Croix Reading Campaign Slogan and Logo Contest.
The contest, sponsored by a division of the V.I. Education Department, was open to all St. Croix District students. In recognition of the winners, the Reading Campaign Committee will host a parade and ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Sunny Isle Shopping Center, and the public is invited.
Other winners include: Ronnie Quetel, Alfredo Andrews School, second place; Garreesa Henry, Eulalie Rivera School, third place; and Eman Abdelghani, IQRA Academy, fourth place.
Zoraida Jacobs, program coordinator, said the reading campaign was launched to create awareness of the challenges facing students in our schools and to demonstrate ways that everyone can help to improve reading.
"A feature of the campaign and the first activity was a book festival, " said Jacobs. It coincided with the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C., and a representative from Education attended that event with a display where participants could learn about the U.S. Virgin Islands and the many books written by Virgin Islanders. A unique bookmark made from cover images of local books was featured.
The committee urges all interested persons to become a volunteer or a partner. For more information call Jacobs at 773-1095, ext. 248.
