Jan. 10, 2003 – St. Croix appears as the backdrop of the Teens on the Green World Championship Golf Series pre-recorded in November at the Carambola Golf Course. This week three networks are broadcasting coverage of the tournament.
Virgin Islanders could preview the national television coverage on Channel 2 at 7:30 p.m. Friday. NBC and The Golf Channel will air coverage of the minority junior golf tournament this weekend. The NBC Channel 6 affiliate in Miami will feature one hour of tournament coverage at 1 p.m. (2 p.m. AST) Saturday, according to a release from the Tourism Department. The Golf Channel also will air an hour-long broadcast of the tournament on at 4 p.m. (5 p.m. AST) Sunday, Jan. 12.
CNN aired footage of the St. Croix event earlier this week on Monday, Jan. 6, during a segment featuring Teens on the Green coordinators Cheyenne Woods and Renny Roker. Woods was featured receiving one of the prestigious Turner Broadcasting Awards for the organization's work in exposing junior golf to young minorities.
National publications, including USA Today, have received advanced copies of the program for their review, and print coverage is expected as well.
The V.I. Tourism Department was the title sponsor of the minority junior golf tournament held on the island, November 26-30, 2002.
"The tournament was a great success, and I am elated to see the beauty of St. Croix and our premiere golf courses showcased on national television," Tourism commissioner Pamela Richards said.
Teens On The Green is the first "ranked" televised junior golf event and series in the history of the sport. Official ranking points are essential for juniors to attract the attention of college golf coaches. The seven-tournament series is ranked by the "Junior Golf Scoreboard," Golf Week, and Titleist and sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union. The tournament provides top minority junior players ages 10-17 (up to a senior in high school) with quality lessons and playing time at upscale resorts and golf courses. Participating junior players are among the best in the world.
