Jan. 21, 2003 – University of the Virgin Islands President LaVerne E. Ragster has been named 2003 Woman of the Year by the Business and Professional Women's Organization of St. Thomas.
"It was a surprise to have been chosen for such an honor by this esteemed organization," Ragster said.
BPW also has named Human Services Commissioner Sedonie Halbert as Woman of Achievement and BPW member Yvonne Brutus as Woman of Appreciation.
All three honorees will be recognized at the BPW's Feb. 2 luncheon at Marriott Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort.
Joyce Caron of the BPW said that the organization picked Ragster as its Woman of the Year because she is UVI's first female president. She took over as the university's fourth president on Aug. 1, 2002.
"BPW has always been at the forefront of equal pay and equal recognition for women in the workplace," Caron said.
St. Thomas born, Ragster is a 1969 graduate of Charlotte Amalie High School. She holds a bachelor of science in biology and chemistry from the University of Miami, a master of science in biology from San Diego State University and a doctorate in biology from the University of California, San Diego. She has spent her entire career at UVI, starting as an assistant professor of marine biology.
Caron said the BPW is honoring Halbert because the federal government has recognized her efforts in guiding the Human Services Department. The commissioner's office did not supply biographical background information.
Caron said Brutus is being recognized for her dedicated work with BPW. Brutus could not be reached for comment.
The Feb. 2 luncheon begins at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $40, with proceeds to benefit the BPW's scholarship program. To reserve tickets, call Caron at 774-9227 or Rita Brady at 775-9120.
