Jan. 29, 2003 – Tutu Park Mall and students from local elementary and high schools are uniting to present the much awaited second annual "Step into Your History: Celebrating Black History" step show competition.
At 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, schools will vie for the title of "Tutu Park Mall's Best Black History Step Interpretation 2003" and cash prizes. They will be judged and awarded points based on time, appearance, step routine and lyrics.
"Based on the level of commitment and enthusiasm those children displayed [last year], I'm predicting the 'Celebrating Black History' step show will be an annual event for years to come," said Pamela Morales, the mall's marketing director. "As a community we have to be responsible enough to provide these types of outlets for kids to express themselves."
Earlier the same day, Sigma Theta Omega Sorority will present a Black Arts Festival. Art forms such as dance, drama, music, poetry drawing and painting, will be presented to further explore the interpretation of Black history.
