April 9, 2003 – Seventy Danes making a two-week visit to St. Thomas and St. Croix will be the guests of Innovative Communication Corp. at a private party on Thursday in the restored historic Danish residence that houses ICC's corporate headquarters.
Bjerget House, built in the late 1700s when the Danish flag flew over the islands, was restored by Innovative and furnished to reflect its former glory. "It's all done in period pieces. It's magnificent," Innovative spokesman Tom Dunn said.
Dunn also noted a contemporary connection between the house and the visiting members of the Danish West Indian Society. The home, located in Christiansted, was for many years the part-time residence of Danish pianist/comedian Victor Borge. He died on Dec. 23, 2000.
The Top Hat Restaurant, which features Danish cuisine, will cater the cocktail reception.
The Danes, who arrived in the territory on March 29, spent their first week on St. Thomas as guests of that branch of the Friends of Denmark. They are now visiting St. Croix.
Holland Redfield II, ICC vice president for corporate affairs, said company officials felt that Bjerget House "with its rich Danish history and architecture would be a unique point of interest for out Danish guests."
The Friends of Denmark dates back to 1967, when then-Gov. Ralph Paiewonsky planned celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Transfer Day that included a visit by members the Danish West Indian Society. Since then, the two organizations have hosted visits every two years by each other's members, alternating between Denmark and the Virgin Islands.
