April 11, 2003 – Pierina Jacobs-McBrowne and Elmo D. Roebuck tied the knot on March 29, Government House announced on Thursday.
For the politician/storyteller and the press release writer who has planned scores of weddings for other people, it seems to be a case of politics making perfectly logical bedfellows.
Both are longtime Democratic Party activists in the Virgin Islands.
"Rina" has been press secretary to Gov. Charles W. Turnbull from the start of his first term. Before that, she and her late husband ran a wedding-planning business based at Marriott Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort.
"Elmo D." holds the distinction of having been elected to eight Legislatures — the 10th through 15th, 18th and 19th — and serving as president in an unprecedented four of them. Since leaving office in 1984, he has held a number of appointive positions and provided political consulting services to succeeding administrations. He also is known for his traditional storytelling talents — which he came by naturally from his late father, Ector Roebuck, a revered tradition bearer in the community.
The Government House announcement stated matter-of-factly that "Pierina Jacobs-McBrowne is now married to former Senator Elmo D. Roebuck Sr." The only details provided were that the wedding took place on St. Thomas at Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church on March 29 in a ceremony "with close family and friends attending."
The announcement — put out on the letterhead of Jacobs-McBrowne's own Office of Public Relations — also said the governor "has extended his congratulations to the couple, wishing them a long, healthy and happy life together."
