Aug. 17, 2003 – L. Doug Wilder, former governor of Virginia, will be in the Virgin Islands to help commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Gov. Alexander A. Farrelly.
Gov. Farrelly died Sept. 10, 2002, at the age of 78.
A fund-raising breakfast will be held at Gertrude’s Restaurant on St. Croix at 8 a.m. Sept. 13. Tickets are $30. On Sept. 14, there will be a 12:30 p.m. brunch at Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort on St. Thomas. Tickets are $50.
The fund-raisers are being held to benefit the Alexander A. Farrelly Milestone Fund at the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. This fund was established in 1993 on the occasion of Gov. Farrelly’s 70th birthday, according to a release. The purpose of the fund is to assist disadvantaged youth and families in the territory.
Another event planned for the weekend is the launching of an interactive Web site where visitors can discover or re-discover Alexander Farrelly.
Joan Harrigan Farrelly, widow of the former governor, believes that this "Living Book" will help not only Virgin Islanders but those outside of the territory understand a little bit of the history of the Virgin Islands and of Alexander Farrelly.
There will also be a special prayer service at the 6 p.m. Mass at Holy Family Church on St. Thomas on Sept. 13.
Wilder said he is honored to be participating in the events in memory of his good friend and colleague. Wilder, who has not visited the territory in some time, said he is looking forward to his visit, albeit without his friend Alex.
For tickets or for more information, call the Community Foundation at 774-6031, or stop by the office at Suite 2C, Royal Dane Mall. Those wishing to contact Joan Harrigan Farrelly may do so at (202) 262-6835.
