Senator Russell Reports on School Preparedness
Aug. 21, 2003 –Senator Russell, Chairperson of the Education and Youth Committee, along with Commissioner of Education Dr. Noreen Michael, other members of the Department of Education, Board of Education, and the media participated in a "walk-through" of seven schools to assess their readiness prior to the re-opening of the schools in the Territory.
The Department of Education selected eight schools to participate in the walk-through. In the district of St. Thomas/St. John the schools selected were: Addelita Cancryn Junior High School, Evelyn Marcelli Elementary School, Dober Elementary School, and Ivanna Eudora Kean High School. In the district of St. Croix, the Juanita Gardine Elementary School, John H. Woodson Junior High School, and Alexander Henderson Elementary School were selected.
Senator Russell was pleased with the efforts of the of the school administration and observed that the schools appear to be ready to greet students and teachers as they return to class for a new school year.
However, the senator promised to continue to monitor the schools and assist the Department of Education in providing the very best learning environment for the youth. "I intend to visit the schools after classes have been in session to determine if there are any additional concerns that need to be addressed".
"The key to the student's success," continued Senator Russell, "is an environment that is conducive to learning."
"I would like to congratulate the Commissioner and the Department of
Education on their diligence in the school summer maintenance program," stated Senator Russell, "and I am looking forward to their continued attention to the education process."
