SENATOR WHITE REMINDS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS OF CIVIL RELIEF ACT INFORMATION
Senator Celestino A. White, Sr., wishes to remind servicemen and women serving our country of benefits that are available to them under the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act. Many servicemen and servicewomen from the Virgin Islands are participating in the War in Iraq. While protecting our Nation during the war on terrorism, some servicemen and servicewoman may face difficulty in meeting certain financial obligation at home, such as rent or mortgage payment, if they are activated for military duty, Senator White stated.
The U. S. Department of Housing and Urban has taken steps to insure that service members protecting our country do not suffer the added burden of worrying about the loss of a home. According to HUD Secretary, Mel Martinez, "When our sons and daughters in uniform are called upon to serve this great nation, we will stand behind them."
"I am encouraging our servicemen and woman, and their families to know your rights under the Soldiers and sailors Civil Relief Act and take advantage of with those benefits, which includes; Mortgage Relief, Termination of Leases, Protection from Eviction, a 6% Cap on Interest Rates, Stay of Proceedings and Reopening Default Judgments," said Senator White.
You may visit the HUD Web-site www.hud.gov or call the HUD Veterans Resource Center at 800-483-2209 for additional information, stated Senator White.
