Nov. 11, 2003 – Trumpeter Eddie Russell will headline an evening of Latin melodies, original compositions and more for the Sunset Jazz in Frederiksted concert on Nov. 21 in Veterans Park.
Playing with him for the Frederiksted Economic Development Association presentation will be Ronald Russell on guitar, Antoine Clarke on keyboards, Gary Zappa on bass, Bobby Richards on drums and Ray Iles on congas.
The music starts at 5:30 p.m. and will go for two hours. Just when the sun will slip into the horizon off the waterfront is up to Mother Nature, but it's part and parcel of the evening's inspiration.
Sunset Jazz in Frederiksted is a FEDA offering on the third Friday of each month. Admission is free and families are welcome. There are a few park benches for seating, but concertgoers are urged to bring their own folding chairs or blankets to spread on the grass.
Eddie Russell "brings a delightfully refreshing approach to the music and a delightfully refreshing spirit to match," publicity states.
As usual, FEDA will operate a cash bar in support of concert production costs, and Hispanos Unidos will be selling food to raise funds for its community projects. And, as always, concertgoers are invited to stay a while in town afterward to have dinner and/or take in some of the nightlife.
WTJX-TV/Channel 12 will be recording the concert for later broadcast as part of its "Sunset Jazz in Frederiksted" series that airs on Saturday nights at 8 p.m.
Jazz fans, take note: December's concert, on the 19th, will be a celebration of the second anniversary of Sunset Jazz in Frederiksted. St. Thomas pianist Roan Creque and Friends will be crossing the waters to perform, and there'll also be a "Holiday Sweets Market" offering home-made tarts, sweetbreads, coquito, Crucian candies and preserves.
