Senator Lorraine L. Berry has called upon Commissioner Elton Lewis to supply her office with information verifying whether or not Communications Specialist, Wayne Williams of the Police Department, is one and the same person as Wayne Williams, Board Member of Delta Communications.
Berry’s request stemmed from today’s Daily News headline article indicating they are the same person; that a serious conflict-of-interest exists and that this is being covered-up by the Police Department.
In her capacity as Chairperson of the Committee with oversight of that Department, Berry noted her request is the first step in further investigation or in putting the matter to rest.
Berry’s letter to Commissioner Lewis noted his cooperation would be one more bit of evidence that he means to route out corruption, as he had testified before her Committee last week, wherever it may exist.
At the root of the conflict-of-interest allegations is the claim that inferior communications equipment is being supplied to the Police Department through special employee connections and without going through the bidding process. Stated Berry, "should this be true, another name for this is corruption."
