March 15, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
UVI Marks 42nd Charter Day with Week of Activities
UVI is planning a week of activities to celebrate the 42nd anniversary of Charter Day – March 16, 1962. This year's Charter Day observance theme is: "UVI: A Link in the Chain of Our Community of Learners." Activities began Monday, with the Fifth Annual Bennie and Martha Benjamin Lecture Series featuring retired nurse Laura Moorehead White. Nurse Moorehead White will present her lecture at noon on Thursday, March 18, on the St. Croix campus in the Nursing Section's room Q100.
Another highlight of the week will be a 7 p.m. lecture on Tuesday, March 16, by the Honorable Ronald V. Dellums, a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Rep. Dellums will be the inaugural speaker in the new Alfred O. Heath Distinguished Speakers Forum.

UVI Plans "Day at Tutu Park Mall" for March 20
UVI will conduct an informational "Day At Tutu Park Mall" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 20. University administrators, faculty members and students will be on hand to share a personal snapshot of UVI's numerous academic and special program offerings. Information regarding admissions procedures, financial aid and housing options will also be available. Admissions applications will also be accepted during the day. The deadline for applications for the fall semester is April 30. For more information call 693-1160.
UVI Men's Volleyball to Host Squad from the University of Maryland
The UVI men's volleyball team will play three matches against the visiting University of Maryland's club team beginning March 20. Matches on Saturday, March 20, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 21, at 6:30 will be played at Charlotte Amalie High School. The Tuesday, March 23, match will take place at 8:30 p.m. at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. Admission to all games is free.
200 Expected at Spring Open House on St. Croix Campus
UVI's St. Croix campus will conduct its spring open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 18. Approximately 200 juniors and seniors from St. Croix's public and private high schools have been invited. UVI academic division, all academic and student support services, the student affairs component, enrollment management and all student clubs and organizations are expected to join in showcasing the campus and the University's opportunities.
2004 Isaac Dookhan Memorial Lectures Set March 18-19
Sir Roy Augier, Professor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, will be the guest lecturer at the 2004 Isaac Dookhan Memorial Lecture, hosted by the UVI Social Sciences Division. Augier will present on the topic "The Links Between the Islands in the Caribbean." The St. Thomas campus lecture is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 18, in room 303 of the Classroom Administration Building. The St. Croix campus presentation will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 19, in the Evans Center Theater, room 401. For details call 693-1260.
Second Spring Research Symposium Set March 20 on St. Croix
UVI's Second Annual Spring Research Symposium is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, at the Student Center on the St. Croix campus. The works of approximately 20 participants in UVI's Emerging Caribbean Scientist scholars program will be on display. The scholars are UVI students from the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses who work directly with faculty members on various research projects. UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics is asking Virgin Islands high school teachers to encourage their students to attend the symposium. For more information call 692-4150.
Senior Recital for E. James Belle Set for March 21
Saxophonist E. James Belle will present his senior recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, at the Nisky Moravian Church. The performance is sponsored by the Music Area of the Humanities Division of the University of the Virgin Islands. Belle will be accompanied by Monet Davis. Admission is free. UVI Jazz Ensemble Spring Concert to Feature Bassist Larry Ridley
The UVI Jazz Ensemble featuring bassist extraordinaire Larry Ridley will present a spring concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, at the New Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. The concert is under the auspices of UVI's Humanities Division Music Department. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets are available from the UVI Humanities Division, the Music Area, UVI Bookstore and Ensemble Members. For further information contact Martin Lamkin at 693-1194.
'A Masquerade Fantasy' is Theme of Spring Banquet and Ball
The Social and Cultural Committee of the Student Government Association on UVI's St. Croix campus has announced that the theme of the 13th annual UVI Spring Banquet and Ball is "A Masquerade Fantasy." The Spring Ball is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, at the Great House on the St. Croix campus. Tickets are $25 per person and $30 per couple. Attire is formal.
UVI Scholarship Application Deadline is April 2
UVI scholarships applications for the 2004-05 school year are now available for high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Applications can be obtained at the Financial Aid Offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Applications and the required letter of recommendation are to be returned to the UVI-Financial Aid Office no later than the scholarship deadline which 4 p.m. on Friday, April 2. Power of PowerPoint is Topic of Next WNET Roundtable
"Discover the Power of PowerPoint" will be the topic of the March meeting of the WNET (Women's Network for Entrepreneurial Training) Roundtable scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23. Donald Chandler of Island Technical Solutions will be the presenter. The Roundtable, sponsored by the New Image Foundation, will be held at the UVI Small Business Development Center office at Nisky Center. Admission is $10 in advance and $15 at the door. A light lunch is included. New Image graduates and UVI students, faculty and staff are admitted free. For information call 777-8883.
