FIRST CANCER TELETHON SET FOR MARCH 27

March 17, 2004 — The Roy Lester Schneider Hospital and TV2 have joined together to broadcast the first ever "Charlotte Kimelman Cure for Life Telethon" from 6 p.m. to midnight next Saturday, March 27. The telethon will be held live on TV from 6 p.m. to midnight and will be simultaneously carried on Radio One.
The money raised from the telethon will go to the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute already under construction. Anyone wishing to contribute can call 714-LIFE (5433) from 6 p.m. to midnight on March 27.
Hosting the show will be well-known storyteller and comedian from Trinidad, Paul Keens Douglas. Other local personalities include Addie Ottley, Reny Roker, Sam Topp, Ras Regg, Lee Vanterpool and others. On hand to educate and inform the viewing audience will be physicians Dr. Roy Lester Schneider and Dr. Bert Petersen Jr.
There will be several entertainers performing during the telethon. They include Kemisha Counts, Yvette Finch, Malvern Gumbs, Martin Trio, Flame, Bomba Latin Dance Group from C.A.H.S., Jackie Harrigan Francis, Michael Justis, Revo, The Rising Stars, Flame, Purpose, BCB Steel Orchestra, the Peas Soup Band from UVI, and many others.
"The Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute represents the future of quality health care delivery in the territory," said Schneider Hospital CEO Rodney E. Miller Sr. "While much has been accomplished in the months since the historic groundbreaking of the center, financially there remains much to do. We are hoping the community will continue to rally around our efforts to make this cancer center a reality and support this telethon," he said.
"Once completed in the spring of 2005," Miller continued, "this center of excellence will be posed to treat cancer patients not only from the Virgin Islands, but from other Caribbean islands as well."
