June 12, 2004—The Human Society in a press release advises that there is an animal overpopulation problem in St. Thomas.
The release states that statistics show that a mother cat and her litter can produce 420,000 kittens in 7 years. The Humane Society offers help. The shelter is open seven days a week. With cooperation and a special surgery rate from the island veterinarians, and the funding from a bequest from Ethel Brinkerhoff, the Humane Society offers a spay and neuter program that costs only $35.
To qualified applicants fill out a short form and provide financial information showing the need for financial help. Once the applicant is approved, the applicant pays the nominal fee to the shelter and takes the forms to the veterinarian of choice. The individual is responsible to the vet for any other services apart from the spay or neuter surgery, and an administrative fee of $15.
By spaying or neutering pets, the Humane Society states there will be a reduction in the loss of animal lives, future medical costs, animal cruelty, and homeless, starving animals on the island.
