June 19, 2004 – Mary Cromwell, a ninth grade student at The Good Hope School and the daughter of Ms. Beatrice York and Mr. Errol Cromwell, has been admitted to the Columbia University Summer Program for High School Students in New York City.
The program offers rigorous, pre-college courses taught by Columbia University faculty for students in grades nine through 12. Courses include: Approaches to Reading and Writing, An Introduction to the Physical Sciences, The Media and Politics, and An Introduction to Creative Writing. Mary will pursue the Understanding the Arts program.
The admissions committee looks for highly motivated students who display a passion for learning, who write well, and who want to expand their knowledge in a particular field of study. Highly selective in its admissions, Mary was chosen from among several thousand applicants worldwide for this challenging opportunity, a release said.
In addition to experiencing campus and college life in New York City, Mary will live and work with other high achieving students from Latin America, South America, Europe, India, Japan, and Africa, with whom she will be able to share her own Caribbean culture and heritage.
