Special Education Office Sets Autism Institute

June 22, 2004 – An autism training summer institute will be held Aug. 16 through Aug. 20 at the Westin Resort in St. John.
Belinda West O'Neal, state director of special education, said in a press release that the institute would consist of three presentations.
The first, General Education Alternative Instructional Strategies, will be given by Dr. Marcia Tate, author of Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites and Ed Ellis, author of Makes Sense Strategies.
Joanie Armstrong and Susan Hawkins will give the second presentation, Autism Training. Attendees of this training must have attended last year's Autism Institute.
Art Cernosia will present the third presentation, Aspiring and Current Administrators. His discussion will focus on Section 504 of the No Child Left Behind Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, discipline, and adequate yearly progress.
Current school and center administrators, parents, V. I. board of education members, special and general education teachers in both elementary and secondary levels, staff of the Department of Health's Division of Maternal and Child Health, representatives from the University of the Virgin Islands, community members and other related professionals may attend this training.
Institute participants will have the opportunity to purchase instructional materials and technology devices.
