Free HIV Testing Offered June 23 on UVI's St. Thomas Campus
The UVI Community – staff, students and faculty – are encouraged to take advantage of a free, confidential HIV testing session scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23, at the UVI Health Services Center on the St. Thomas campus. Testing is being offered by the V.I. Health Department's HIV Prevention Program in conjunction with the UVI Health Services. In addition to testing, information on how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and free condoms will be available.
Humanities Division Soliciting Instructor Resumes
The UVI humanities division on the St. Thomas campus is soliciting resumes from individuals who are qualified to teach any of the following courses: basic design, survey of world art, selected problems in world art, basic drawing, painting, design, drawing, oil painting and arts and crafts for elementary teachers. Contestants Sought for Miss UVI 2004-2005 Competition, Set for Oct. 30.
UVI is recruiting female students interested in competing to become Miss UVI 2004-2005. Miss UVI serves as a student ambassador for the University. The deadline to apply is Monday, Aug. 30, with the competition scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 30, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Summer Programs Draw High School, Elementary Students to UVI
Three summer residential programs for high school and elementary school students are under way on both UVI campuses.
On the St. Thomas campus, approximately 21 high school students are participating in the Summer Business Residency Program which continues through July 2. Another 50 high school students are taking part in the Summer Science Enrichment Academy which continues through July 23.
On St. Croix, 20 seventh- and eighth-graders are enrolled in the first of three Junior Summer Science Enrichment Academies. The first St. Croix academy continues through June 25, the second will run from June 28 through July 9, and final academy is scheduled for July 12 through 22.
Homeland Security Training Session Underway on St. Croix
The second in a series of Homeland Security Training courses being offered in the Virgin Islands is underway this week on St. Croix. The five-day courses — six each on St. Thomas and St. Croix — are being offered by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center in collaboration with the V.I. Law Enforcement Planning Commission. The courses, which are free, cover threat awareness and response to terrorist actions. They are designed for a wide variety of first responders from police, fire and emergency medical personnel, to those in private security companies and governmental offices. A spokesperson said vacancies still exist in a number of the remaining course sections.
Additional weekday courses on St. Thomas will begin on July 12, July 26, Aug. 9 and Aug. 23. A Saturday-only course on St. Thomas began on June 19. Additional weekday courses on St. Croix will begin on July 19, Aug. 2, Aug. 16 and Aug. 30. The Saturday-only course on St. Croix will begin on June 26. SBDC to Conduct 'Women in Business' Forum on St. Thomas
UVI's Small Business Development Center will conduct an open forum titled "Women in Business" from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 24, at the SBDC Training Center in Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The forum will cover a wide variety of concerns involved in operating or developing small businesses. A panel of women business owners will be featured. Panelists will include Yvette deLaubanque of Curves, Joann Lynch of VIP Awards and Engraving, and Lorna Webster of Private Collections. For more information or to pre-register call 776-3206.
Application Deadline Extended to July 5 for Grant-Writing Seminar
A grant-writing seminar sponsored by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology/Minority Access to Research Careers program will be offered at UVI on Aug. 12 and 13. The deadline for filing applications for the workshop has been extended to July 5.
The two-day seminar – which will originate on the St. Thomas campus (Chase Auditorium – Business 110) and be teleconferenced to the St. Croix campus (Evans Center 401) – is designed to help investigators achieve their full potential in research by providing them with grant writing skills that are necessary to maximize their abilities to generate novel ideas, and to communicate those ideas effectively to grant review panels. It is open to the public and would be especially appropriate to individuals in the V.I. Health Department and hospital employees. Conducted in association with Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops LCC, the seminar will be funded through the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health under the FASEB Visiting Scientists for Minority Institutions Program.
