June 27, 2004 – July 13 is the deadline for young people to submit entries for Conde Nast Traveler magazine's 12th annual "My Caribbean" essay contest.
Open to youngsters ages 8 to 12 in the region, the competition was created to "enlighten children throughout the Caribbean about the benefits of tourism as well as broaden their overall perception of life's opportunities," according to a release from Martin Public Relations, the territory's mainland publicity agency.
One winning essay will be selected from each member country and territory of the Caribbean Tourism Organization; these finalists will be the guests of the CTO at its annual Caribbean Tourism Conference set for Oct. 17-19 in Aruba. Conde Nast will award the grand prize winner a $2,000 scholarship and two runners-up $500 scholarships.
Virgin Islands children are invited to write an essay about "the one unique thing visitors will enjoy on a vacation to St. Croix, St. John or St. Thomas that they cannot find anywhere else in the world," the release states. Essays should be hand-written and 250 to 500 words long and should be delivered to a Tourism Department office by July 13.
A local judging panel will select five V.I. essays that will be forwarded to the CTO, where the territory's winning entry will be chosen. For more information, call the Tourism Department at 774-8784 on St. Thomas, 773-0495 in Christiansted, 772-0357 in Frederiksted or 776-6450 on St. John.
