June 29, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued on June 28 has these announcements:

UVI to Close for Emancipation Day and Independence Day
UVI will be closed this Friday, July 2, in observance of V.I. Emancipation Day and also on Monday, July 5, in observance of U.S. Independence Day. UVI offices will reopen and classes will resume on Tuesday, July 6.
SROTC Information Available on St. Croix Campus
A Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (SROTC) program will begin on the UVI St. Croix campus in the fall. The SROTC program will develop an officer corps for the U.S. Army and the National Guard. UVI's SROTC program is intended to attract those high school students in the Virgin Islands who are currently enrolled in Junior ROTC programs. The program is also available to freshmen and sophomores. For more information about the program call Dr. Aletha Baumann in UVI's Social Sciences Division at 692-4117.
Contestants Sought for Miss UVI 2004-2005; Competition Set Oct. 30
UVI is recruiting female students interested in participating in the Miss UVI 2004-2005 competition. Miss UVI serves as a student ambassador for the university and receives several valuable prizes including a scholarship covering tuition, room and board for two semesters. The deadline to apply is Monday, Aug. 30. The competition is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 30, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Starfest Featured Each Monday on WTJX-TV
The Virgin Islands' best singers and dancers are featured each Monday in Starfest on WTJX Public Television. The program includes highlights from past Starfests and airs at 8 p.m. It is offered in collaboration with UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts.
Application Deadline for UVI Grant-Writing Seminar is July 5
A grant-writing seminar sponsored by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology/Minority Access to Research Careers program will be offered at UVI on August 12 and 13. The deadline for filing applications is July 5. The two-day seminar — which will originate on the St. Thomas campus (Chase Auditorium, Business 110) and be teleconferenced to the St. Croix campus (Evans Center 401) — is designed to help investigators achieve their full potential in research by providing them with grant-writing skills that are necessary to maximize their abilities to generate novel ideas, and to communicate those ideas effectively to grant review panels.
It is open to the public and would be especially appropriate to individuals in the V.I. Health Department and hospital employees. Conducted in association with Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops, LCC, the seminar will be funded through the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health under the FASEB Visiting Scientists for Minority Institutions Program.
