Criteria for the Granting of Taxi Medallions Pursuant to Act 6533

The Commissioner of the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs has made the following findings in its criteria for the issuance of twelve (12) taxi medallions on the island of St. John, pursuant to Act No. 6533 passed into law by the 25th Legislature on December 23, 2004.
1. Applicants must be residents of the United States Virgin Islands.
2. The applicant must have played an integral part in the growth and development of the St. John tourism economy over the years.
3. The applicant must possess expertise in the field of public transportation of tourists on the island of St. John.
4. Applicant has to demonstrate by clear and convincing evidence that he/she has the ability to provide transportation for the use of medallions.
5. Applicant must possess vehicle(s) that have a seating capacity of at least twenty-five (25) passengers.
6. Applicants must be presently operating under a tour operator's license.
7. The applicant must demonstrate by clear and convincing evidence that he/she will use medallions for the further development of the tourism economy on the island of St. John as it pertains to the transportation of cruise ship passengers.
8. Applicant must have a minimum of twenty (20) years experience of transporting tourists on the island of St. John.
9. Said medallions cannot be leased, sold, assigned or otherwise transferred.
