Julius Sprauve School Has Pet Program

0

July 12, 2004 – The Animal Care Center of St. John has organized a "Safety and Kindness" program as part of its effort to educate children in safely approaching dogs, appreciating pets and learning to be kind. Approximately 30 summer enrichment students, from kindergarten to grade two, will be taking advantage of the program on Friday, July 16, at Julius Sprauve School.
Dr. Laura Palminteri, the veterinarian from Cannines, Cats and Critters, will bring in two large dogs – one her own and the other a rescue dog – to demonstrate how to safely approach dogs and understand their nature. This half hour demonstration will be followed by student questions. Two kittens will also pay a visit for some petting and touching time.
To prepare the children to think about what it means to be kind to animals may draw a picture to share their ideas and thoughts on Kindness to Animals. The students with the most meaningful messages will receive an animal related theme prize.
"Mr. Mario Francis, the school principal and Marla Powell, program co-coordinator, were both very happy to support the ACC's desire to involve itself in teaching both safety and kindness to animals. In fact-it is known that teaching these values to children with animals at an early age helps create human beings who are able to be kinder to each other," said Bonny Corbeil, The Care Center's education chairperson.
She added, "Dr. Laura has volunteered her time and skills in the past and has been very successful in her demonstrations to children about safety with pets. We hope to develop more of these same kinds of programs on St. John throughout our schools in the future."
