Calabash Boom Developer to Meet with Council Group

July 12, 2004 – About two dozen members of the Coral Bay Community Council began to educate themselves on Monday about the Calabash Boom affordable housing project planned for St. John's East End.
"There are some concerns about the three-story density," Sharon Coldren, the organization's president, said at a meeting held at the John's Folly Learning Institute.
The eight-acre project is to have two components:
– Six two-story townhouse buildings with four units each — for a total of 24 units — that will be available for purchase by qualifying buyers. The Housing Finance Authority is responsible for this part of the project.
– Four three-story rental buildings of 12 apartments each — a total of 48 units of one, two, three and four bedrooms.
Robert O. Jackson, Reliance Housing Foundation president, has said Reliance will build the apartments, while RR Caribbean will build the townhouses for the Housing Finance Authority. However, he said, Reliance will handle the organizational work for both parts of the development.
Council member Bonnie Blair met earlier on Monday with Housing Finance Authority representatives to get more details about their plan. "We learned a lot about it," she said at the council meeting.
Coldren said Jackson has agreed to meet in August with a council committee formed to deal with Calabash Boom issues and that he will address the general membership in September.
She also said that officials of the Moravian Church Conference were invited to address Monday's meeting on the church's proposed development in Coral Bay, but declined.
The Moravian Church has proposed to build a 150-room hotel, 300 condominium units, a 50-slip marina, office buildings and a supermarket.
Coldren said she hopes that Jackson's cooperation will set an example for other developers planning projects in Coral Bay. "We'd like all developers to take this approach," she said.
Blair urged anyone hoping to live in either the townhouses or the apartments of the Calabash Boom project to join the council so as to have input into the area's development.
