Shooting Victim Dies, Charges Changing to Murder

July 19, 2004 – Charges against a suspect in the shooting incident in downtown Christiansted on July 11 were in the process of being upgraded to first-degree murder, according to Deputy Police Chief Herminio Velazquez.
Velazquez said Monday that the victim in that incident, 21-year-old Marvin Augustin, had died at Governor Juan Luis Hospital on Sunday morning.
Rahede Teague, 23, of Bassin Triangle, and Darnel Harvey, 18, of Constitutional Hill were arrested last Tuesday. Police had reviewed film from security cameras that, reportedly, caught the whole incident.
Teague was the suspected shooter and was charged with assault in the first degree. His charge is being changed to first-degree murder.
Velazquez said he believed that Teague had made the $150,000 bail set by Maria Cabret, presiding judge at the Territorial Court, and he was now free. He said Teague would be notified of the change of charges, but Velazquez was not sure if a new bond hearing would be set.
It was not immediately apparent if there would be any change in the charges against Harvey.
The incident occurred about 2 a.m. in front of the Moonraker Lounge on Queen Cross Street in Christiansted. A published report stated that a fight between two individuals escalated and Augustin had became involved trying to help the individual who was outnumbered three to one.
