Contest for the Dogs Encourages Youngsters to Write

0

Bellows International, Master Foods Interamerica and Pedigree, a maker of food and snacks for dogs and puppies, want to know why the territory's youngsters love their dogs so much. And to find out, the organizations are teaming up to sponsor an essay contest for 8 to 12 year-old's on all three U.S. Virgin Islands.
The young person who writes the best answer to the question,"Why is my dog so dear to me?" will win a year's supply of Pedigree dog or puppy food, compliments of Bellows and MFI.
The original idea for the contest belongs to MFI's business development manager, St. Croix resident Janice Jackson, who said,"The whole purpose was to encourage children to write during the summer."
Jackson explained that she originally ran the contest on Tortola earlier this month, and the "response there has been good, we've had a lot of entrants." Tortola's contest winner has not yet been selected.
It was Giovanni Rochester, consumer products manager for Bellows, local distributor of Pedigree products, who had the idea to hold a contest here as well. "Janice explained the contest on Tortola and I thought, why not do the same thing here?"
The official contest flyer states that all essays must be 150 words or less and will be due by Aug. 20. The winner will be selected Aug. 31.
Interested young dog-loving essayists can mail their entries and one Pedigree UPC label to: Consumer Products Department, P.O. Box 302695, St. Thomas, VI 00803. Entrants may also bring their essays to a Bellows office in person. Bellows on St. Thomas is located at 4-D Contant, across from the Sub Base Pueblo. On St. Croix, the location is 8-A Estate Diamond, in Frederiksted.
Jackson also said that win, lose or draw, every child entering the contest will receive a small gift, a token of Jackson's and Rochester's appreciation of the importance of good writing skills.
