July 27, 2004 – More than a year since a truck knocked its roof down on April 15, 2003, work is set to begin on the redesign and reconstruction of the bungalow at Rothschild Francis "Market" Square.
Engineer Udo Penther has been given the contract for redesign and construction management of the rebuilding of the Sanderilla Thomas Bungalow, according to a release from Lt. Gov. Vargrave Richards.
Pender is charged with preparing "all architectural and engineering plans necessary to facilitate the systematic and structurally sound reconstruction of the bungalow," the release sent Tuesday afternoon said.
Richards, who in his capacity as acting governor signed the contract on Saturday, said the rebuilt bungalow will be "structurally improved and made to resist increased lateral forces," like a truck hitting it. (See "Truck Hits Bungalow, Bringing Roof Down; 5 Hurt"
Richards said existing drawings by St. Thomas architect Doug White and specifications from earlier repairs will be utilized in the new drawings and specifications.
The bungalow has historical and economic significance to the community as a marketplace for local farmers selling produce. All plans will be "reviewed, discussed and subsequently approved by the Historic Preservation Commission," Richards said.
In the meantime, farmers and fishermen can still be found in the square early on Saturday mornings, selling local fish and produce.
