Weekend Event Designed To Hook Kids on Fishing

0

Aug. 6, 2004 — Hooking kids on fishing is the theme of this weekend's Kids Hand Line Tournament. And the young anglers will be bringing home more than fish; the catch of the day will include great prizes and school supplies.
The fifth annual young anglers event, for children ages 3 to14, is on Sunday, Aug. 8 at the Christiansted wharf. Registration is free and begins at 8 a.m. The tournament starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m. Prizes will be awarded at 12 noon in three age groups and will include bicycles, rod and reels, and all participants will get book bags and school supplies. Space is limited and only the first 200 children, accompanied by their parents, will get lines, hooks, bait and a free t-shirt.
The program is designed to introduce children to the sport of fishing and help them become more aware of the importance of a healthy and clean environment. "We are promoting family togetherness and respect of the ecology," Fred Lalik, one of the event's organizers, said.
"The children will learn about different species of fish and representatives of the Animal Shelter will give a lecture on animal cruelty."
The tournament benefits the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center and lunch will be provided to all participants. This yearly event is organized by the Golden Hook Fishing Club of St. Croix.
