Get Some Genips to Help Care for Some Critters

Aug. 10, 2004 – Anna Clarke, who owns the Toad and Tart restaurant in Smith Bay, has come up with a novel way to raise money for the Humane Society of St. Thomas. On Sunday, she and a band of volunteers will be selling genips along both sides of the road by the restaurant.
She's calling the fund-raiser Genips for Crits. The genips – from her tree – will be for sale in $1, $2 and $3 bunches from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m
"They're just ripening up now and will be perfect by Sunday," she said on Tuesday. "The tree is bending over from all the fruit."
Additionally, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Toad and Tart will dish up barbecued burgers and more to raise money for the Humane Society.
Clarke said that while you can make a quick stop along the road to buy the genips, you'll have to come into the restaurant for the eats. While you're there, you might want to buy a ceramic pet bowl or other pet merchandise, peruse the brochures about pet care and adopt a puppy or kitten.
Clarke sees this as a good use of her genips. There are far too many for her to consume, and she otherwise has to deal with trespassers who might sue her if they fell out of her tree while filching the fruit.
