Nov. 8, 2004 – The St. Croix Environmental Association invites the public to its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Buccaneer Hotel's Little Mermaid Restaurant. Those who attend are asked to bring a covered dish to share.
Director Megan Shoenfelt said that the 18-year-old organization is reaching out to the public to reinvigorate the organization.
"SEA is in a rebuilding process. We want to encourage new membership," Shoenfelt said. She said the organization needs new ideas, new people and new energy to build on the experience of its 500 members.
In addition to a short business meeting, the evening will feature a presentation on the environmental impact and recovery during the 15 years since Hurricane Hugo devastated the island in 1989.
Shoenfelt said that Zandy Hillis-Starr, chief of resources management for all three national park facilities in St. Croix, will speak on turtles; Errol Chichester,of the V.I. Agriculture Department will discuss trees; and SEA's Carol Cramer-Burke will talk about mangrove restoration. Hillis-Starr will also discuss coral reefs, and Cramer-Burke will talk about birds. Additionally, construction expert Carlos Tesitore and insurance expert John Harper will discuss the impact and recovery of people and buildings.
The members will also vote on nominations to the board of directors. They are Tesitore as chairman, Harper as vice-chairman, Ferdi Abraham as treasurer, and Sheelagh Fromer as secretary. Hillis-Starr, Dr. Casey Canton, Andy Wartenburg, and Ditty Layton are nominated to the board.
Shoenfelt said that Lisa Yntema is the sole, new nominee to the board. Members will vote on her nomination.
