Nov. 18, 2004 – The Division of Environmental Protection is investigating reports of a sewage overflow in the Hospital Grounds area on St. Thomas, Department of Planning and Natural Resources Commissioner Dean C. Plaskett said in a release.
The Department of Public Works reported that a municipal sewer line has collapsed, causing raw sewage to be released into the adjacent gut and eventually discharged into the St. Thomas Harbor. The affected gut runs along Dronnigens Gade, Hospital Line, Prindsen Gade, Kongens Gade and Veteran's Drive, in front of the Ron De Lugo Federal Building.
The situation will be corrected by Friday, Nov. 19, he said.
Plaskett is advising the public to avoid low-lying areas near Hospital Grounds. He also advises the public that children and adults with compromised immune systems should avoid all standing or running water in these areas because they may contain contaminants harmful to human health. DPNR will continue to monitor the impacted areas and update the public accordingly.
