The Ahn Trio Opens Concerts in the Garden Series

Nov. 9, 2004 – "Once upAhn a time in Korea were born a pair of twins…followed two years later by their sister." So begins the story of the Ahn Trio, three sisters who have been bringing new fans to classical music since they were small children. Twins Maria and Lucia, and their sister Angella play the 'cello, piano and violin, respectively.
The Ahn Trio will be kicking off the 18th season of Arts Alive Presents Concerts in the Garden with a performance at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Tillet Gardens. The Trio will also perform at the St. John School of the Arts at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24.
The sisters made their first public appearance on Korean television in 1979. They moved to the United States in 1981, at the ages of nine and seven, to study at Juilliard. The Trio was brought to the attention of American audiences with a 1987 Time magazine story about "Asian American whiz kids," and through the NBC coverage of the Seoul Olympics. Since then, they've been featured in Vogue, GQ, Town and Country, the New York Times, People magazine, on Gap ads, and on PBS, to name a few.
The Ahn Trio plays newly commissioned works and the works of ageless masters, attracting long-time fans of the classics while bringing a younger audience into the fold. Their CDs include Ravel and Villa-Lobos Piano Trios, and Dvorak, Suk and Shostakovich trios. In 1997, the Trio appeared on MTV on "Bryan Adams' Unplugged," which led to their CD "Ahn-Plugged," followed by "Groovebox." These CDs feature contemporary pieces, including an adaptation of "Riders on the Storm" by the Doors.
The musicians are hailed as a brilliantly distinguished ensemble gifted with extraordinary powers of communication and an exquisite blend of sound. "It is possible to look cool and play well… There is truly sisterly harmony about the way the twins Maria and Lucia and their sister Angella are at one in their music making, with close contact being constantly maintained by means of glances, signs, and small gestures," a review from the Frankfurter Rundschau reads.
Performances in the Ahn Trio's schedule have included stops all over the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, South America and Asia.
Future concerts in the series include classical pianist Julian Lawrence Gargiulo on Jan. 5 on St. Thomas and Jan. 6 on St. John; Corky Siegal's Chamber Blues on Jan. 26 on St. Thomas and Jan. 27 on St. John; and Bella Hristova on Feb. 9 on St. Thomas. A prix fixe dinner will be offered before each concert. Tillet Gardens' Ridvan Studio, Alison's Wonderland, Caribbean Herbals and Kazooti Clay Studio will be open during intermission.
Tickets for individual concerts are $30; dinner is an additional $30. Season tickets are available: for four concerts the price is $108, with dinner, $228; for three concerts the price is $81, with dinner, $171. Call 775-1929 for more information.
