Dec. 9, 2004 – The Hintz Academy of Music's sixth annual "Christmas Musical Show" will take place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Amphitheater Room at Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort.
Donations are welcome before the holiday-season event and at the door. A post-show reception is open for all performers and their guests. Recent award-winning activities by some of the performing students are described here.
Academy Update
Six piano students from the Hintz Academy of Music traveled to Puerto Rico to participate in an annual piano competition held Nov. 19 at the Conservatory of Music in Hato Rey. These students were chosen to represent the U.S. Virgin Islands based on their musical skills and academic achievements. The students were divided in categories by age. All the participants were evaluated by a panel of two music professors from the Conservatory of Music and the music department at the University of Puerto Rico. The points were calculated and revised as
the young pianists participated in a handbell demonstration of the local handbell choir. Once the event culminated, students were given plaques, certificates and medals based on their final evaluation sheet.
The youngest student, 5-year-old Resham Mirpuri, won first place in her category as she successfully represented the Suzuki Method. Oluwakemi Chinnery, 10, also surprised instructors with her performance, and she was awarded first place in her category. Christina Zayas, 12, performed the complicated Pachelbel's "Canon in D," and received second place for her performance. Nine-year-old Sheline Chandi, 10-year-old Sabrina Mirpuri and Ch'koia Bryan, 13, won third place in their respective categories. They also received special honor medals for performing traditional Puerto Rican "Danzas."
The judges offered congratulations to the students along with some encouraging words. "You girls did beautifully. We hope to see you next year," said one of the judges. After a long day of inspiring music and nerve-racking hours, the students celebrated their achievements with a group dinner and entertainment by Puerto Rican musicians performing traditional folk music of the island.
Academy director Katherine Hintz is very proud of all her students, a release said. "I look forward to another year of great triumphs," she said.
