Dec. 14, 2004 – St. Croix students will be making plot number signs as part of a new program designed to make it easier for emergency personnel to locate addresses on St. Croix.
The V.I. Resource and Conservation and Development Council, Inc., is coordinating an after-school program aimed at making St. Croix residents safer by having students design, manufacture and install free plot number signs on residential properties, according to a release.
Property owners are required by law to affix the plot number to their property in a conspicuous place facing the public road. V.I. RC&D secured $25,000 in funding from the Forest Service, and John H. Woodson and Central High School students will be able to earn extra money while developing entrepreneurial skills, according to the release.
"V.I. RC&D and WAPA are concerned about the ongoing situation facing emergency and utility service providers who continuously encounter difficulty locating homes when responding to crisis calls. The precious time that is lost by these professionals trying to locate homes could actually be saving lives and protecting properties. In a nutshell, 'plot signs save lives,'" May Adams Cornwall, former VI RC&D president and WAPA project coordinator, said in the release.
Project partners include the Police and Fire Departments, the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, the V.I. Water and Power Authority, Innovative Communications, the Department of Planning and Natural Resources and Joseph Equality Construction.
