Cruzan Sprockets Dominate Cycling Event

Dec. 20, 2004 – The newly formed Cruzan Sprockets Cycling Team dominated Sunday’s East End Road Race. The race started at 7 a.m. at the Solitude Store.
In a sport where team tactics are paramount, the club utilized the collective experience of its members to grab the top slots in the season’s first road race, held in slick conditions, on St. Croix’s challenging East End course.
In the two lap, 26 mile Elite Category, club President Gabe Weber soloed off the front during the first lap to gain the victory, finishing over two minutes ahead in 1hour 20 minutes and 30 seconds. His teammate Sue Brown, attacked at the start of the second lap, to easily grab second. Tom Guthrie, also a Sprocket, held off Glenn Massiah for third.
Cruzan Sprockets riders John Frongillo and Raymond Brown attacked from the start of the 26 mile Expert Category race, destroying the field, with Frongillo winning in a time of 1:22:34. Brown suffered a mechanical problem, but hung on for a strong second. Kamal Russell was third.
Tyler Jowaisis, a student at St. Croix Country Day School, won the one lap, 13 mile Sport Category race, claiming his second category win in the last six months. Nelson Rojas was second and Kathy LaGrange finished third.
The next event will be held on St. Croix’s North Shore on Jan. 2, 2005. For more information, please call 773-8456.
