Jan. 3, 2004 – Curtis Gomez, a V.I. native, began work, after a brief morning ceremony, as district court judge on St. Thomas Monday.
Gomez, former assistant U.S. attorney, was nominated for the position by President George Bush in November 2003 and was finally approved by the U.S. Senate a year later.
Gomez replaces Judge Thomas Moore, who was not reappointed after serving his 10-year term. Moore had been nominated for the post by the first President Bush in 1991 and served since the U.S. Senate approved him in 1992.
Although Monday's 11 a.m. ceremony was not the official swearing-in ceremony for Gomez, the new district judge began his duties that same afternoon.
A district court law clerk said Monday that while Gomez has begun work, there are no cases pending before him until his official swearing-in, which will take place Jan. 28.
Gomez, 41, graduated as the valedictorian of the Charlotte Amalie High School Class of 1981. He received a bachelor's degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., in 1984 and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1989.
Gomez did not return calls Monday.
