Jan. 10, 2005 – Police have identified the man whose bullet-ridden body was found near Mandahl Bay last week as Jayder Chemont.
However, little else is known about the man, who was found by police in a pool of blood shortly after neighbors called 911 to report gun shots being fired in the area.
Sgt. Thomas Hannah, police spokesman, said no age or place of residence had been established for Chemont as of Monday evening.
Police also have no suspects or motive for the Jan. 6 shooting. However, Hannah said, "The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy is pending."
At the time he was found, Chemont was dressed in a white T-shirt, blue short jeans and Timberland boots He had no identification on him and police at the time called on the community to help identify the dead man. Hannah did not say Monday how Chemont finally came to be identified.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the V.I. Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau at one of the following telephone numbers: 715-5522, 774-2211, Ext. 4143, 4144, or 4149; the Major Crime Unit at 715-5546, the Crime Line at 777-8711 or Emergency 911.
In a release from the VIPD, Hannah said, "This incident is classified as a homicide and under investigation to determine the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Mr. Chemont." Hannah said any information given will be held in the strictest of confidence and a reward may be offered. Additional information may be found at the Police Department's Web site at www.vipd.gov.vi.
