Religious Leaders Plan Public Forums

Jan. 12, 2005 – Three local religious leaders of different faiths will be participating together in panel discussions during January. Three sessions will cover different topics aimed at comparing the ideologies and practices found in Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Rabbi Arthur F. Starr, of the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas, decided to put together the program because, as he put it, "I am of the strong belief that most people don't know anything about Islam."
His idea was to create a program allowing representatives from each of these religions to discuss shared beliefs as well as differences in a forum where the public could ask questions. "Through that process we can introduce each other to each other," he said.
The first in the series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral. The subject will be "The God We Worship and the Different Ways We Worship that God." The panel that night will include Rabbi Starr, Bishop George Murray, and Imam Monsour Thunebat.
The second session, "The Feasts and Fasts of My Faith," will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 19th at St. Andrews Church. And the third session, "My Faith in Daily Life," is scheduled for the same time Jan. 26 at All Saints Cathedral. The panels for the second and third programs remain to be chosen.
