Carnival Committee Now Accepting Applications

0

Jan. 11, 2005 – After months of contention between the V.I. Carnival Committee and the V.I. Legislature, particularly Sen. Adlah "Foncie" Donastorg, the planning stages of Carnival 2005 are now emerging.
The Carnival Committee, in a release issued Tuesday, stated it was now accepting applications for the Prince and Princess, Carnival Queen and Miss America V.I. Classic pageants.
The release further stated, "due to political hindrance, organization of Carnival 2005 is severely delayed." Because of this, the Carnival Committee is asking all interested individuals to turn in their applications before Jan. 31.
The committee has also scheduled a meeting for Friday for all its subcommittee chairpersons at its headquarters across from the Department of Finance building.
The organization took time to commend the St. Croix Festival committee for its "outstanding production" of the 2004-2005 Crucian Christmas Festival.
"Their success in producing a quality product amidst the negative intentions of some individuals proves that community support and the spirit of cultural celebrations are stronger than negative politics and politicians," the release stated.
The Carnival Committee had received a lot of pressure from Donastorg to submit to a government audit of its finances. The committee claims it is a non-profit entity and therefore was not subject to a governmental audit, although it receives a substantial portion of its funding from the V.I. government. A territorial court judge ruled the committee is subject to an audit.
Despite the political interference it faced and a reduction in its 2005 budget, the committee maintained that it was "willing and ready" to run the cultural production with the support and financial assistance from the government. (See "Committee 'Willing and Ready' to Run Carnival 2005").
