Jan. 13, 2005 – The Senate Consensus Majority revealed its policy agenda earlier this week, though not formally.
The group chose to insert its agenda toward the back of the 26th Legislature's Swearing-in Ceremony booklet.
Stating that the Consensus Majority proposes to "pass meaningful legislation" and "advance prudent public policies," the group announced its goals for economic development, education, healthcare, government reform, social/quality of life issues and political reform.
"We are unconditionally committed to responsive, accountable and principled leadership," the majority stated in its written introduction to its policy agenda. "We will ensure that transparent governance takes place and decision-making occurs in the full view of the people. The Consensus Majority will play its noble role as trusted public servants transforming the territory for the betterment of all."
The majority was formed after Sens. Lorraine Berry, Adlah "Foncie" Donastorg and Shawn-Michael Malone broke off from the Democratic Party caucus and joined with the then minority of independents and Independent Citizen Movement members.
The other members of the Consensus Majority are: Sens. Liston Davis, Norman Jn Baptiste, Terrence Nelson, Usie Richards and Celestino White Sr.
Some of the highlights of the Consensus Majority's agenda include:
– Passing the Financial Services Bill that was vetoed by Gov. Charles W. Turnbull
– Promoting sports tourism as a major attraction for economic development within the territory
– Provide researched and comprehensive alternative educational programs
– Support the improvement and construction of facilities for the elderly
– Re-establish the Commission on Youth and Sports
– Pass the Omnibus Justice Bill vetoed by Turnbull
– Adopt the Revised Organic Act of 1954 as the Constitution of the Virgin Islands.
