Good Hope School to Host Family Quadrille

0

Jan. 21, 2005 — As part of The Good Hope School's celebration of Caribbean heritage, the school will be hosting a Quadrille Dance on February 5th from 8-12 pm in the Good Hope Campus Center starring Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights. This Quadrille Dance will be a family style dance open to the public with children, adults, and novices encouraged to take part in this unique and fun St. Croix tradition. Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults and they can be purchased at The Good Hope School main office or at the door. Refreshments and food will be available.
"We are very excited and honored to have Mr. Stanley Jacobs come both for the dance," said veteran Spanish teacher Ms. Vanessa Ayala Berg. Joined by former Good Hope Head of Middle School and Senator, Mr. Luther Renee, Mr. Jacobs will play with some of his band members from the Ten Sleepless Nights at a school assembly on January 25th to teach the students about Quelbe, this special form of indigenous, grass-roots music which originated in the Virgin Islands. All of the "Ten Sleepless Knights" will play for the Family Quadrille Dance on February 5th to deepen the Middle School students' understanding and use of the Spanish language.
The Quadrille is a relaxed social dance that is still performed in St. Croix. It is usually performed by at least four couples under the direction of a floor master. A set consists of six different figures or numbers in different paces, some quite long. To help the Good Hope students and teachers learn the Quadrille, Mr. Renee will share his experience and knowledge of the St. Lucian Quadrille and help teach some of the traditional dance sets.
The Family Quadrille Dance on the 5th of February is open to the public and all are welcome to come out, dance, experience this St. Croix tradition. Please call Ms. Berg at 772-0022 ext. 172 for more information.
