VIPA Holding Hearings on Fee Increases

0

Feb. 7, 2005 –– The V.I. Port Authority will hold a series of hearings on raising its marine rates and changing the way it calculates its charges Darlan Brin, Port Authority director, said Monday.
"Ships dues, wharfage, docking fees, pilotage……," he said, ticking off a list of charges that will change.
Cruise ship rates will not change until 2006 because they are already contracted.
He said the fees will only be charged if a vessel uses a Port Authority facility. There is no charge for using the harbor.
The hearings begin Monday at the Legislature building on St. John. On Tuesday, the meeting will be held at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport conference room on St. Croix, and on Wednesday at the Port Authority's Administration Building conference room. All begin at 7 p.m.
Brin said that copies of what the Port Authority has proposed are available on St. John at the Port Authority Marine Office and at the St. John Administrator's office. On St. Thomas, they're available at the Charlotte Amalie Marine Office and at the Port Authority office at Cyril E. King Airport. On St. Croix, find them at the Port Authority Marine Office and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport.
He said the hearings are intended for the companies that use the Port Authority facilities, not the general public. Brin said such companies received copies of the proposed changes and were notified of the hearings. Copies will not be available at the hearings.
He said that in some cases, companies that now pay a daily per foot fee will be charged a monthly fee.
Brin said the Port Authority last raised its marine rates in 1996.
