News Brief: Senate Again Passes Animal Cruelty Bill

0

Feb. 11, 2005 – The Senate once again passed the Animal Cruelty bill Friday. It passed with 12 affirmative votes, two not voting and one absent. Sponsor Sen. Adlah "Foncie" Donastorg, and animal advocates were immensely pleased, but with caution.
The bill has had a rocky career, finally passing unanimously last November, only to be vetoed by Gov. Charles W. Turnbull. Joe Elmore, Humane Society of St. Thomas executive director, said he will use the time between now and when the bill once again reaches the governor's desk to good advantage to lobby for the bill's signature.
A full account of the bill's history, and its passage will be in the Saturday Source.
