Mar. 4, 2005 – Classes were once again in session at Addelita Cancryn Junior High School Friday. The school dismissed students about 10 a.m. Thursday after noxious fumes in the area made some students sick.
The school has been plagued by odors since Wednesday, when classes were disrupted by gas fumes from a nearby gas station. Students were evacuated early in the day, but returned about half an hour later. The odors had come from Gottlieb's Gas Station where air quality testing was being conducted on the tanks.
Thursday, students were evacuated early again because of a different odor coming from the nearby landfill. They returned to school, only to be dismissed for the day, as the smell had become stronger, Yvonne Pilgrim, school principal said Thursday. The odor was later identified as transmission lubricant. Friday everything was normal, with students in their classrooms. "Today, it's beautiful,"said Ahmed Popo, assistant principal, Friday morning. "It was apparently that heavy lubricant odor."
