March 4, 2005 –– Good writing has earned Victoria McFarlane, a senior at Charlotte Amalie High School, a trip to the 2005 Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage in Alabama. She will be accompanied by Delegate Donna M. Christensen.
McFarlane wrote the winning essay on "The Impact of the Voting Rights Act on My Life."
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, members of Congress, accompanied by students from their districts, will participate in a two-day pilgrimage to the historic sites of the civil rights movement which will culminate in a re-enactment of the "Bloody Sunday" march across the Edmund Petttus bridge.
"I would like to thank Victoria's parents and teachers, especially CAHS counselor E. Skelton and Principal Jeanette Smith Barry for their assistance in preparing her to attend what I know will be a moving and memorable event," Christensen said .
The pair departed today.
