PRAXIS Teacher Certification Exams Scheduled Saturday, March 5
The University of the Virgin Islands will conduct the PRAXIS teacher certification exam on its St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses on Saturday, March 5.
St. Thomas test times are as follows: Session I — 7:30 a.m.; Session II — 10:30 a.m. The exams will be administered in the Nursing Building – rooms 201 and 214.
St. Croix test times are as follows: Session I — 7:30 a.m.; Session II — 10:30 a.m. The exams will be administered in Evans Center, with rooms to be assigned the morning of the test.
Individuals must pre-register for PRAXIS exams. Future PRAXIS exams are scheduled for April 16 and June 11. The registration deadline for the April test has passed (although late registration is possible). The registration deadline for the June 11 test is April 12. Limited Seating Remains for Freddie McGregor's March 5 Show at the Reichhold
Limited seating remains for the March 5 performance by reggae artist Freddie McGregor at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The show starts at 8 p.m. Local artists Inner Visions will also perform. Internationally acclaimed, McGregor has enjoyed more than 40 successful years in the music business and is considered Jamaica's most consistent recording artist. For ticket information call 693-1559. UVI Serves Up Afternoon on the Green on Sunday, March 6
The territory's best cooks will have their recipes ready for tasting Sunday when the grounds of the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on St. Thomas come alive for Afternoon on the Green. The fun begins at noon on Sunday, March 6, when the annual University of the Virgin Islands "friendraiser" gets underway. Individuals interested in preparing a dish, or those who have a valid health permit and are interested in volunteering to serve food, still have time to participate. Spring Recess Set March 7 and 8; Administrative Offices to Remain Open
The University of the Virgin Islands will observe Spring Recess on Monday, March 7, and Tuesday, March 8. Classes resume on Wednesday, March 9. UVI administrative offices will be open on their regular schedules during the two-day Spring Recess.
Activities Marking UVI Charter Day Stretch from March 8 through 16
In recognition of the University of the Virgin Islands 43rd annual Charter Day, UVI will host a number of activities from March 8 through March 16, 2005. The official Charter Day celebration will be held from 9 to11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, in the Chase Auditorium, room B110, on the St. Thomas campus, with a videoconferenced link to the Theater, room EC 401, on the St. Croix campus. Free Film: 'Like Water for Chocolate' set March 9 on St. Thomas Campus
The Humanities Division's Modern Languages Area on UVI's St. Thomas campus continues its celebration of "2005: The Year of Languages" with free foreign films each Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110). UVI-Queen Mary Walk/Run Set March 11; Sign-up Sheet Available On-line
UVI's alumni, students, faculty and the entire Virgin Islands community are invited to participate in the fourth annual UVI-Queen Mary Highway 5K Walk/Run on Friday, March 11. The walk/run is a major part of the St. Croix campus' Charter Day observances. A sign-up sheet for the Walk/Run is now available in the "Latest Links" section of the UVI web site – http://www.uvi.edu. The walk/run begins at 6 a.m. in the K-Mart parking lot in Sunshine Mall and ends at the campus at approximately 8 a.m. The registration fee is $15 for adults and $12 for students and children. Registration forms are also available from the St. Croix campus Chancellor's Office. The V.I. Pace Runners organization is providing technical assistance. For more information call 692-4000.
UVI Faculty Members to Perform Benefit Concert March 13
Adjunct UVI Humanities Division faculty members Josandra Jones James and Lorna Freeman Dennis will perform at a benefit concert for the Jones School of Music on Sunday, March 13. In addition to James, who teaches piano at UVI, and Dennis, who teaches voice, Jones School of Music students will perform with Levi Farrell on flute and organist Rebecca Faulkner. The concert will take place at 4 p.m. at the Shiloh Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Anna's Retreat. For details call 693-1193.
March 15 EPSCoR Lecture to Focus on Impact of Coastal Recreation on St. Croix
The impact of coastal recreation on St. Croix will be the subject of the next lecture in the VI-EPSCoR Science series, to be presented by Nathanial Olive at noon on Tuesday, March 15. (There will be no EPSCoR lecture on March 8, as students will be off for Spring Recess.) The March 15 lecture will originate in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on the St. Thomas campus with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 713 on St. Croix. The 2005 EPSCoR lecture series is free and open to the public. It continues at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. In the lectures, UVI and visiting scientists present results from their original research. The series is sponsored by the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. Teachers Invited to Join V.I. Writing Project's Third Summer Institute
Teachers who wish to develop their skills as writers and as teachers of writing are invited to apply to the Virgin Islands Writing Project's third Summer Institute. The program will be held on the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands from June 15 through July 20, 2005. A stipend of $800 will be awarded to all participants, and housing, meals, and transportation will be provided for residents of St. Thomas and St. John. Teachers from all grade levels and subject areas are encouraged to apply.

Big Brother to Dominate UVI's Spring Production of '1984'
George Orwell's classic novel "1984" will come alive this spring on the stage of UVI's Little Theatre on the St. Thomas campus. The Little Theatre's spring's play is scheduled for April 1 through 4. Dr. Rosary Harper of the UVI Humanities Department says the cast has been selected, but the play's most imposing character is one you will never see: Big Brother. Tickets go on sale March 14th at Dockside Bookstore, Nisky Pharmacy, UVI Bookstore, and the Humanities Building. General admission is $12. Students with ID are admitted for $6.
