UVI to Observe Spring Recess – March 25-28
The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed for Spring Recess from Friday, March 25, through Sunday, March 27. Classes will resume and administrative offices will return to normal hours on Monday, March 28.
Intramural Team Tennis and Table Tennis On Tap for St. Croix
St. Croix Campus intramural team tennis is set to kickoff during the week of March 28. Teams will compete in a round-robin format, playing men's, women's and mixed doubles in tennis and table tennis. All interested students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate. For details, contact intramural coordinator Coach Bruce Wray at 692-4139.
March 29 EPSCoR Lecture to Feature Research Assistant Tara Kirkpatrick
UVI post doctoral research assistant Tara Kirkpatrick will present the next VI-EPSCoR Science Lecture. The session is scheduled for noon, on Tuesday, March 29 in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus. Kirkpatrick will discuss her Ph.D. work. The title of her presentation is "The Neuroanatomy of Cat Visual Area 19 and Its Potential Role in Vision."
The 2005 EPSCoR Science Lecture Series is free and open to the public. It continues at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. All lectures feature UVI or visiting scientists presenting results from their original research. The series is sponsored by the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. For more information, call 693-1380.
Free Foreign Language Films Continue March 30 on St. Thomas Campus
"The Year of Languages" celebration continues with free foreign films each Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Generation Now Sets University Forum on VI Status for March 30 on St. Croix
"To Secede or Not to Secede?" will be the topic of a public forum on UVI's St. Croix campus at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30. The event, co-sponsored by Generation Now, Inc. and the UVI Student Activities Office, will take place in the Cafetorium. Featured panelists include Louis Willis, director of Virgin Islands Internal Revenue Bureau, John Abramson, VI Supervisor of Elections, and Rena Brodhurst, publisher of The Avis newspaper. Willis' subject will be fixing the current system. Abramson will discuss municipal government. Brodhurst will talk on self-governance. UVI students and faculty, as well as the general public, are encouraged to participate. The panel will accept questions from the audience. Admission is free. This is the second in a University Series of forums organized by Generation Now, a non-profit group of some 60 young people on St. Croix who are concerned with the quality of life in the Virgin Islands. 'Schooling for the Future' Is UVI Carnival Theme; Costume Premier Set April 1
The 2005 UVI Carnival floupe theme will be "Schooling for the Future." The troupe — expected to include 80 to 100 members — will perform along with the Ah We Band in the Carnival's Adult's Parade. This year's costumes will depict various schools of tropical fish and the float is designed to resemble an underwater classroom. UVI's Community Engagement Committee plans to premiere prototype costumes in posters and flyers as well as on live models at a fish fry at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 1, outside the Sports and Fitness Center. UVI to Host Mini-Courses in Science and Math for Teachers of Grades 7-12
UVI's Science, Math and Technology Professional Development Project will host a series of mini-courses for science and math teachers in grades 7 through 12 in the territory's public and private schools. Pesticide Safety Education Training Scheduled for St. Thomas on April 6
The University of the Virgin Islands' Cooperative Extension Service will conduct a free Pesticide Safety Education Training for Beginning Applicators (Core) from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 6 at the UVI Cooperative Extension Service (New House Building) on the St. Thomas campus. Workshop on Birds of the VI and Puerto Rico Offered April 7 on St. Croix
The University of the Virgin Islands' Cooperative Extension Service Agriculture and Natural Resources Program will present a free workshop on Birds of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7.
