March 31, 2005 – Eight members of the University of the Virgin Islands faculty were granted tenure by the UVI Board of Trustees at their March meeting. As tenured faculty they are granted employment by the University on a continuous contract.
The newly tenured faculty are Dr. Gloria Callwood of the Nursing Division on the St. Thomas campus; Dr. Dennis Griffith of the Education Division on the St. Croix campus; Dr. Douglas Iannucci of the Science and Mathematics Division on the St. Thomas campus; Dr. Benon Kisuule of the Business Administration Division on the St. Croix campus; Dr. Camille A. McKayle of the Science and Mathematics Division on the St. Thomas campus; Dr. Robert Stolz of the Science and Mathematics Division on the St. Thomas campus; Dr. Velma Tyson of the Science and Mathematics Division on the St. Croix campus and Marvin Williams of the Humanities Division on the St. Croix campus.
UVI President Dr. LaVerne Ragster congratulated the newly tenured faculty, saying that the appointments are "an affirmation that you have met the standards of the University on a long-term basis."
To be eligible for tenure consideration, a faculty member must be employed at UVI in a full-time position of assistant professor, associate professor or professor, having served at least seven years in one of those positions and at least five of those years at UVI.
UVI has a tenure ceiling of 55 percent, which means that a maximum of 55 percent of the faculty maintain tenured status. Each spring semester the faculty review advisory committee considers eligible faculty for available tenured positions.
