University Community/Friends Infited to Join UVI Carnival Floupe
The UVI Community and friends of the University are invited to participate in the University's Carnival 2005 floupe – that's a float and troupe entry in the Adult's Parade. "Schooling for the Future" will be the theme for UVI's floupe. Between 80 and 100 troupe members are expected to proudly wear the colorful costumes which will depict various schools of tropical fish. The UVI float will resemble an underwater classroom. Summer Session Class Schedules Now Available On-line
Class schedules for UVI's two 2005 summer sessions are now available on the UVI web site. Also included are dates and detailed instructions for on-line and in-person registration. The first summer session is scheduled for May 16 through June 17. The second session will run from June 22 through July 28. Due to the addition of a second summer session, advisement and registration for the 2005 Fall semester will be held April 11 through 15. Students Urged to Explore Financial Aid Offerings
UVI President Dr. LaVerne Ragster is urging all UVI students who believe they need financial assistance to visit the UVI Financial Aid Office as soon as possible. The Financial Aid Office is reviewing financing options in order to assist any students who might experience a shortfall. More information is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
International Students Required to Present Travel Information
All international students at UVI are advised that they must present their travel information to the UVI Admissions Office for update. Failure to comply will result in a hold being placed on student accounts and delays in travel. For more information, contact the Admissions Office at (340) 693-1150. Instructors are asked to remind students of this requirement. Students who haven't presented travel information will be denied class registration, grades, transcripts and other University services until information is submitted.
St. Thomas Intramural News…
Basketball Tournament — Intramural basketball action is in full swing. The six teams have completed "pre-season" play and now begin a double-elimination tournament at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 4. The tournament will continue from 7 to 9 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday for the next two weeks. Games take place in the Sports and Fitness Center.
Table Tennis — Intramural doubles table tennis play has begun, with teams meeting at 3 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday in the Sports and Fitness Center. Additional play is scheduled at 7 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday. Play includes men's, women's and coed divisions.
Tennis — Tennis on the outside courts continues from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Play includes singles and doubles action in both men's and women's divisions.

UVI's Spring Production of '1984' Scheduled for April 1-4
George Orwell's classic novel "1984" will come alive this spring on the stage of UVI's Little Theatre on the St. Thomas campus. The Little Theatre's spring play is scheduled for April 1 through 4. Dr. Rosary Harper of the UVI Humanities Department says the cast has been selected, but the play's most imposing character is one you will never see: Big Brother. Tickets are on sale at Dockside Bookstore, Nisky Pharmacy, UVI Bookstore, and the Humanities Building. General admission is $12. Students with ID are admitted for $6. UVI Business Students Providing Volunteer Tax Assistance
A group of 25 UVI business students are participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at the Virgin Islands Internal Revenue office. The group spends Saturdays assisting the public in preparing tax returns. This service continues through April 9.
UVI Humanities Festival Opens Sunday, April 3
The University of the Virgin Islands will celebrate the humanities with a week-long Humanities Festival from April 3 through 9. This year's theme is "Focus on the Folk: Virgin Islands Arts and Culture." The festival — with events and activities on both the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses — is designed to showcase the scholarly achievement and creative skill in the humanities of students, scholars, artists and musicians from the Virgin Islands, the wider Caribbean, and the Caribbean diaspora, said organizer Dr. David Gould. Second Session of the Adult Digital Video Workshop to Start April 4
The second session of the Adult Digital Video Workshop at the Reichhold Center for the Arts' Digital Media Institute will begin on April 4. The workshop has six spaces for adults. It meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. through April 20. Participants study camera basics, camera movement, picture composition, sound and video editing, lighting, scriptwriting, storyboarding, pre-production, production and footage critique. Participants also produce a final documentary project. The workshop cost is $450, plus a $50 equipment fee. Applications are available for pick up at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. April 5 EPSCoR Lecture to Feature V.I. National Park's Rafe Boulon
Rafe Boulon, chief of resource management at the V.I. National Park, will present the VI-EPSCoR Science Lecture scheduled for Tuesday, April 5. The session is scheduled for noon in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus. Boulon's topic will be "Managing People: Impacts to Coastal and Marine Resources in V.I. National Park and Coral Reef National Monument." The 2005 EPSCoR Science Lecture Series is free and open to the public. It continues at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. All lectures feature UVI or visiting scientists presenting results from their original research. The annual induction ceremony for the Alpha Mu Gamma National Collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society Mu Pi Chapter will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, at the Sports and Fitness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. This eighth annual event will feature the induction of 12 new members in the Spanish and French languages. Highlights of the evening will be poetry readings in Spanish and French, plus special presentations on American Sign Language and Arabic. Family and friends, as well as members of the Virgin Islands community with an interest in languages are invited to attend.
SBDC to Mark Small Business Week with Open House, Annual Awards
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will commemorate National Small Business Week – April 3-9 – with a series of events in the St. Thomas-St. John District, including an open house at FirstBank VI and the annual presentation of the SBDC's local Small Business Awards. The open house is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, at FirstBank Plaza in Tutu. It will highlight products and services available to local entrepreneurs from both FirstBank VI and the SBDC. The annual SBDC Small Business Awards celebration is slated from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in conjunction with a STT-STJ Chamber of Commerce's Business After Hours Networking Reception. The event takes place at the SBDC's Nisky Center office. This year's honorees include: Shaun A. Pennington of the VI Source newspaper, Edward E. Pesticide Safety Education Training Scheduled for St. Thomas on April 6
The University of the Virgin Islands' Cooperative Extension Service will conduct a free Pesticide Safety Education Training for Beginning Applicators (Core) from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 6 at the UVI Cooperative Extension Service (New House Building) on the St. Thomas campus. Workshop on Birds of the VI and Puerto Rico Offered April 7 on St. Croix

UVI Student Organizes Stroke Fair Scheduled for April 11 at Schneider Hospital
University of the Virgin Islands senior nursing student Reba Williams has organized St. Thomas' first-ever Stroke Fair. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, April 11, at Roy Lester Schneider Hospital. Participants will learn the signs, symptoms and risks of stroke. Strokes are medical emergencies that require immediate action. Medical specialists will be on hand at the fair to offer cholesterol and blood pressure screening. UVI will recognize the efforts of its employees during the 31st annual Service Awards presentations scheduled for April 12 on the St. Croix campus and for April 14 on the St. Thomas campus. CZM Hearing Set April 26 on Proposed UVI-VIERS Project on St. John
The University of the Virgin Islands announces a Public Hearing for a Major Land Costal Zone Management (CZM) Permit for the renovation of an existing lab building and construction of an office building and conference center at UVI's Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS) located at No. 5 Estate Lameshur Bay, St. John. All interested persons – either in favor of or opposed to the granting of this permit – are invited to be present and heard at a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, in the Conference Room of the Legislature Building on St. John. The St. John CZM Committee decision meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 20, in the Conference Room of the Legislature Building on St. John. To review plans for the proposed project, make an appointment with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources by calling 774-3320.
