DPNR Celebrates National Library Week

0

April 11, 2005 — Commissioner Dean C. Plaskett, Esq., of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) announces that the Division of Libraries, Archives & Museums, as well as public libraries across the United States, will celebrate April 10-16th, 2005 as NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK. As such Commissioner Plaskett invites and encourages the general public to use the public library in their community. The theme for this year's celebration is "Something for EVERYONE @ your library."
During National Library Week (NLW), the St. Croix Literacy Center (New Adult Readers Room) at the Florence Williams Public Library will have Ms. Deborah Bellony, Literacy Coordinator, available to provide information about the program and to welcome inquiries. People interested in becoming an adult literacy tutor; adults who want to learn to read; and those in the business community who want to support the literacy effort are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to get involved in this worthwhile activity.
The St. Croix Literacy Center is a joint project of the Department of Education, Vocational Technical Education Adult Education and The Florence Williams Public Library.
Commissioner Plaskett also announces that the public now has access to an expanded list of online reference sources by logging on to (www.library.gov.vi). Library patrons, especially students can access full-text information from the Thompson-Gale Group of databases like: Student Resource Center-Gold; Health and Wellness Research Center; History Resource Center; Biography Resource Center; Kids InforBits; Junior Reference Collection; Science Resource Center; OpposingView Points; and the Literature Resource Center.
In order to provide patrons and staff expert instruction on the use of the reference sources, Mr. Nelson Glass from the Thompson-Gale Group will be at the Florence Williams Library in St. Croix on Tuesday, April 12th at 9 a.m. and at the Enid Baa Public Library in St. Thomas on Wednesday, April 13th at 9 a.m. for a hands-on demonstration.
The initial offering of these valuable reference resources were made possible by a donation from Trust Asset Management, LLP.
The Florence Williams Public Library also has a new collection of books on tape that are available to the public. The library recently added over 100 new titles to its existing collection. The cassette tapes play in a conventional tape player and circulate free of charge to eligible library patrons. The titles in this collection range from popular to classic fiction and non-fiction to non-fiction material for the life-long learner.
Each of the public libraries has books on tape in their collections that are available for check-out.
Additionally, all public libraries in the Territory have expanded its collection of "best seller" books by purchasing a rental plan from Mc Naughton Books, a division of Brodart. The popular service has been in place in the Virgin Islands Public Libraries for years and has made it possible for thousands of new and popular books to be put into the hands of library patrons. The books are rented by the library and made available just like any other library book. The books are heavily used; at some point they are returned to Mc Naughton for new titles as indicated by the "best seller" lists, or they may be placed in the library's permanent collection.
In St. John at the Sprauve Public Library, the Friends of the Library have purchased an additional plan to supplement the library's existing service.
Finally, the Commissioner announces that new books purchased from Scholastic/Grolier are now available for use at the Florence Williams Public Library in Christiansted and at the Athalie Petersen Public Library in Frederiksted.
These special titles are some of the best reference sources available to students and readers interested in a variety of topics. Some of the titles like The Encyclopedia Americana are common reference books and updates the library's collection; others like: Interdisciplinary Encyclopedia of Marine Sciences; Encyclopedia of Urban Cultures; Encyclopedia of American Studies; the Fiesta! (48 volumes); Land and Peoples; Riches of the Earth; Endangered Animals; Grolier Library of North American Biographies; Story of Music; Inventions and Inventors; Math Matters; and English Matters are just a few of the titles that are excellent for students of all ages and are now on the library shelves.
The books will be on display starting April 12, 2005 for patrons to browse. Many are reference books for use in the library only; some do circulate and can be checked out.
From dictionaries and atlases to encyclopedias and guides, these titles direct children to the necessary information they need to know and the fascinating answers they crave. This collection of over 50 titles and high quality books cost over $43,000 and are selected from the Best Selling Scholastic Reference series.
