Classes Conclude April 28; Carnival Recess April 29, Final Exams Set May 2-8
Thursday, April 28, will be the last day of classes for the University of the Virgin Islands' 2005 spring semester. The University will be closed on Friday, April 29, for Carnival Recess. All UVI administrative offices will re-open on Monday, May 2. Final exams are scheduled for Monday, May 2, through Sunday, May 8. The spring semester officially ends on Sunday, May 8.
Deadline Extended for Health Careers Summer Academy for High School Students
The University of the Virgin Islands has extended the deadline for high school students who wish to enroll in this summer Health Careers Opportunity Science Enrichment Academy on the St. Thomas campus.
The residential academy is designed to excite students about careers in the health industry. It is sponsored by UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics Emerging Caribbean Scientists Program and will run from June 19 to July 29. The new sign-up deadline is Saturday, April 30. High school students (grades 10 through 12) who are considering careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, other health areas (except nursing), allied health, clinical psychology and clinical social work are eligible. Participants will explore the basics of biology, chemistry and mathematics through selected readings, demonstrations and laboratory investigations. Sessions will be offered in computer skills, language arts, learning strategies, test-taking skills, college life and more.

New Scholarship Programs Targets Undergraduates in Wide Range of Studies
UVI students are encouraged to investigate a new scholarship program for undergraduates who are pursuing a wide variety of academic interests. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Program is now being offered to undergraduates studying in the following areas: biological, life and agricultural sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, computer and information sciences, social and behavioral science, and teacher education. Protected Areas on St. Croix to be Subject of April 26 EPSCoR Lecture
Dr. Elizabeth Gladfelter from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Marine Policy Center will be the guest speaker at UVI's April 26 EPSCoR Lecture. Dr. Gladfelter's presentation – titled: "Protected Areas on St. Croix: Personal Odysseys and A community Legacy" – will explore the rationale behind the creation of protected areas and provide a look at the individuals involved. The session is scheduled for noon in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus.
The 2005 EPSCoR Science Lecture Series is free and open to the public. Lectures feature UVI or visiting scientists presenting results from their original research. UVI Concert Band to Offer Mother's Day Concert in the Garden on May 8
A "Mother's Day Concert in the Garden" will be presented at 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, by the University of the Virgin Islands Concert Band. The concert will be presented in Emancipation Garden in Charlotte Amalie. UVI Music Professor Austin Venzen, who conducts the concert band, promises a stress-free, relaxing evening. The program will include classics and marches such as Henry Fillmore's "The Klaxon," J.S. Bach's "Air," Frank Erickson's "Air For Band," Hall Johnson's "Ride On King Jesus," Clifton Williams' "The Sinfonians," Irving Berlin's "Songs For America" and John Williams' "The Olympic Spirit." On the lighter side will be such offerings as "The Greatest Love of All," "You Raise Me Up," "On the Wings of Love" and "Let's Groove."
UVICELL Offers Home Health Aide Course in St. Thomas
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center is now registering students for its Certified Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide (CNA/HHA) training program in St. Thomas. This 120-hour course will prepare a student to take the national certification exams to become a Certified Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide (CNA/HHA). Students will learn to provide safe and effective care to their patients, while assisting the care team in achieving patient goals. Course dates are May 10 though July 19 on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The class will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The course fee of $875 includes a manual and medical kit. Upward Bound Alumni Schedule May 14 Videoconference Session
The next meeting of the Upward Bound Alumni Association will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 14. The meeting will be held simultaneously on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses via videoconference. On St. Croix the meeting will be held in The Theatre (Evans Center room 401).
